1955 NSU Quickly with 2-speed gearbox and internal clutch

-

-

Via the clutch sprocket, the torque from the crankshaft is transferred to the large intermediary sprocket on the output shaft.

In first gear, the torque is passed on to the next stage in transmission. This happens via the small sprocket on the intermediary sprocket, which connects to the larger of the two small sprockets on the double-sprocketed shaft. From the smaller of these two sprockets, torque is passed on to the output sprocket. In this stage, torque is passed on to a shifter gear, which again passes it on to the output shaft via a claw clutch and a grooved cog. In second gear, torque is passed on without further ado, i.e. directly to the output shaft via the shifter gear.

Thus, first gear involves 3 stages, while second gear involves only 1 stage.

With this planetary gear system, all sprockets are permanently engaged. First the torque is transferred to the large sprocket. The planet wheel arm is in constant interlock with the output shaft. The sun wheel, which can slide along the length of the shaft, has a splined clutch on the left side and a claw clutch on the right side. These two clutches cannot both be engaged at the same time. When the sun wheel is shifted to the splined clutch on the left, this is locked to the gear casing so that it is prevented from rotating. This causes the planetary wheels to drive the planet arm and thus also the output shaft. In the high gear the splined clutch is free and the sun wheel’s claw clutch is engaged with the arm. In this way the large sprocket is locked to the output shaft.

First gear involves 2 transmission steps, while second gear involves only one.
